Gaye Su Akyol is considered one of the most exciting voices on the Istanbul music scene. Inspired by Kurt Cobain and icon Selda Bağcan, she combines futuristic surf rock and energetic post punk with Anatolian ballads.
At the latest after the 2019 album “Istikrarlı Hayal Hakikattir,” which translates as “Consistent Fantasy is Reality,” , there is no way around her. The interplay of psychedelic electric guitars and thundering percussion with Oud and Bağlama, complemented by sonorous electronica, violin and trumpet, locates itself musically in the urban underground as much as in Middle Eastern traditions.
Most recently, the EP "Yort Savul: İSYAN MANİFESTOSU!" was released in 2020. ("Get out of my way: rebellion manifesto"), was released. Three stylistically very different new tracks, all written and produced by Gaye himself. Here 70s psychedelica and acid rock meet Anatolian music, Turkish vocal techniques and futuristic beats. The songs are political, but without slogans. Gaye's stated goal is to create a counter-reality to challenge organized evil. In other words, Gaye Su Akyol dreams forward without compromise. Into a different future. Let's go.
“Su Akyol’s voice is light but elegant, and her songs are by turns urgent, sultry and romantic and politically barbed. The new sound of Istanbul.”
“The Turkish singer Gaye Su Akyol has emerged at the fore of her country’s revitalized music scene… mixes Turkish modes and scales with surf rock, and psychedelia.”
